DEAD SOFT – Bunghole
“Take it to heart” are the first words sung on Dead Soft’s self-titled cassette, and any fan of driving power pop will do just that. These are some of the catchiest rock ’n’ roll songs to come out of Vancouver, filled with a mesmerizing blend of grit and croon: vocalist Nathaniel Epp keeps it sultry one minute before belting out a Frank Black squeal the next, while bassist Keeley Rochon and death-defying drummer Rory Trough- ton have more machine-gun pummel than
a Doctor Rhythm drum machine. “Phase” and “See Through” are pounding tunes that should be sung out absentmindedly at traffic stops. This album does it better than Jesus.
